Shopify (NASDAQ: SHOP) is the Canadian company that quietly became the default infrastructure for small and mid-sized commerce worldwide. Since its May 21, 2015 IPO at $17 a share, SHOP rode the pandemic e-commerce boom to an all-time high, gave back more than 80% of it in 2022, and then rebuilt on real profitability.
Founded in Ottawa in 2006 by Tobi Lütke, Shopify started as the back end for his own snowboard store. Today it lets millions of merchants sell across their own domain, social channels, physical stores and wholesale, with payments, logistics, capital and POS built in. Unlike Amazon, Shopify never competes with its merchants for the customer relationship.
Subscription Solutions — monthly plans from Basic through Plus and Enterprise — provide predictable revenue. Merchant Solutions, including Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, installments, capital lending and tax services, scale with GMV and now dwarf subscriptions. Commerce Components targets large brands, and offline POS extends Shopify into full omnichannel retail.
SHOP has almost never been cheap, so downgrades to growth expectations produce violent drawdowns. Revenue tracks GMV, offering little defensiveness when retail spending slows. Payments carry lower gross margins than subscriptions, and Amazon, TikTok Shop, Wix, BigCommerce and Adobe Commerce all compete for the same merchants.
Plus and Enterprise merchants bring higher GMV and longer contracts. Shopify Payments and Shop Pay still have room to penetrate existing GMV. Sidekick, automated product content and plugging merchant catalogs into AI shopping assistants open the next channel of demand.
Holding from the 2015 IPO produced a spectacular multiple, yet buyers at the late-2021 peak are still waiting to break even — entry valuation, not business quality, decided the outcome. Track GMV growth, merchant-solutions take rate and free-cash-flow margin.
Note: Shopify pays no dividend, so total return equals price return. "Since IPO" uses the May 21, 2015 first-trading-day close rather than the $17 allocation price, and prices are adjusted for the 10-for-1 split in June 2022. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Data updates daily.
